Elizabeth Schroeder is an international trainer, consultant,
and author in the areas of sexuality education, youth development,
curriculum, and counseling. She has provided trainings throughout
the United States and overseas to thousands of youth-serving
professionals, adolescents, parents, and teens, presented
at national conferences, and written extensively about sexuality
and relationship issues.
Dr. Schroeder is the co-founding editor of the American
Journal of Sexuality Education (Haworth
Press), co-author of Making
SMART Choices: A Curriculum for Young People and
Being Out, Staying Safe: An STD Prevention Curriculum for
LGBQ Youth, editor of Taking
Sides: Clashing Views in Controversial Issues in Family and
Personal Relationships, 5th, 6th and 7th editions, and
author of chapters in Health
Counseling: Applications and Theory and The
Continuum Complete International Encyclopedia of Sexuality.
She also contributed a lesson to the curriculum, New
Expectations: Sexuality Education for Mid- and Later Life.
As a trainer and educator, Dr. Schroeder specializes in facilitation
and presentation skills, adolescent sexuality, lesbian, gay,
bisexual and/or transgender issues, internet safety issues,
and depictions of sexuality in the media. In the international
arena, she has developed adult peer educator and teacher training
programs on sexuality and reproductive health in Kathmandu,
Nepal, contributed to several counseling and training curricula
for international use, and presented at international conferences.
She also serves as a sexuality expert for the Sex,
Etc. and Internet
Friends Network Web sites.
Before becoming a consultant, Dr. Schroeder was the Associate
Vice President of Education and Training at Planned
Parenthood of New York City, where she established the
agency's first professional training institute for social
service and school professionals. In its first year, the training
institute attracted professionals from across the country
and exceeded its attendance goals by over 400%. Before that,
she was the Manager of Education and Special Projects at Planned
Parenthood Federation of America, where she coordinated
the production of their multiple award-winning video kit for
families with adolescent children, "Talking
About Sex: A Guide for Families."
Elizabeth Schroeder has been honored with the American
Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists'
Schiller Prize for her approaches to teaching internet safety
to youth, and the national Mary Lee Tatum award, which is
given annually to "the person who most exemplifies the
qualities of an ideal sexuality educator." She was recently
recognized by the Society
for the Scientific Study of Sex as a "Blossoming
Professional" in sexuality education and research, an
award that hearkens back to her 1999 national Apple Blossom
Award, which recognizes a Planned Parenthood Education or
Training Director who has "risen quickly to the forefront
with new ideas, energy, and commitment." She currently
chairs the Sexuality Information
and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS) Board
of Directors, and has served on numerous local and state Task
Forces and committees.
An Assistant Professor at Montclair
State University, Dr. Schroeder earned a Master's Degree
in Social Work from New York University,
and a Doctorate of Education from Widener
University.
